It will be much faster in the long run than cleaning up after a GEDCOM import would be. Other users can search and look at those genealogy files, but no changes can be made to them, except that the original uploader (i.e., you) can delete an outdated file and/or upload a new one.įamilySearch's Family Tree should be edited one profile at a time. This places a static file in the Genealogies section of FamilySearch. In my (strong) opinion, it is much better to stop the process after the upload.

This is especially the case when using the import process that the mod posted about: the mechanism is badly flawed, failing to detect clear duplicates, failing to give sufficient visibility into existing profiles for good decisions, and failing to prevent inadvertent overwriting of good data. (A lofty and distant goal.) It is nothing at all like the individual trees found on Ancestry or MyHeritage, and importing data wholesale from those sites is not a good idea. It is intended to eventually have one and only one profile for every person who ever lived. Keep in mind that the Family Tree on FamilySearch is an open-edit communal tree.
